MIHAEL AT HIS BEST - THUNDERING OVATIONS FOR THE SOLOIST!

In his Debut in the city of Osijek and belonging Osijek Summer Festival – the far largest cultural manifestation in eastern Croatia – Mihael was set up to deliver one of the most darring performances of his recent time. Upon the invitation of Maestro Mladen Tutavac and chamber orchestra 'Franjo Krežma' he interpreted the Clarinet Concerto by Bruno Bjelinski thus joining the century brithday celebration of the Croatian classic. Ecstatic audience in the fullfiled St. Mihael (!) Church anticipated the unanimous reviews by radio, television and press that followed: '...Acoustic and dynamic profilation of themes and phrases with distinctive musicality and technical perfection...' (B.Ban), while the Festival Jury describes Mihael as a 'Brilliant Soloist at the Osijek Summer'. On the repeated ovations and four curtain calls he responded with a challenging encore – Chopin's Chromatic Etude op.10-2 arranged by himself for clarinet and strings and executed virtually in a single breath...

EUROPASSION 2009 - GALA OPENING FEATURING MIHAEL PAAR

Mihael Paar was particularly honoured receiving the invitation to perform at the Gala opening of the Passion Heritage, distinguished festival which annually takes place shortly before the eve of Easter in Zagreb and other Croatian cities. The acknowledgment is even greater as his festival collaborator – the famous Zagreb Quartet known as the Croatian oldest chamber ensemble and the oldest active string quartet in the world - celebrates its 90th birthday in the course of 2009. The special occasion brought us a special programme feature: Mozart's Clarinet Quintet K581 saw the light through its Croatian Integral Premiere and thus was performed on the basset clarinet, with Mihael Paar as the first Croatian clarinetist ever to do so. The Gala event took place on March 29 in one of the most beautiful Croatian baroque churches - The St. Catherine's in the historical Zagreb Upper Town. NOTE: Passion Heritage Festival is a member of the Europassion Association since 1998.

FEEL THE EDGE - DISCOVER MIHAEL'S PORTRAIT OF THE BLACKBIRD!

Performing The Blackbird Song by A.Müllenbach in 2004, Paar drew a decisive attention. Performance featuring a charming musical theatre, as well as a number of modern playing techniques, some of which came to reinforce the onomatopoeic feature of the programmatic piece, immediately earned acclaims from both the audience and the critiques, additionally resulting with the top prizes at the Ohrid and Padua International Competitions. The attached footage highlights the show from the 29th Samobor Autumn, renowned Croatian Music Festival and stands as the first in the sequence of a nearly dozen performances followed throughout the Italy, Austria, Romania, Macedonia and Croatia. Although frequently approached as a stand-alone piece, the Solo remains an integrative part of a major complex - the Zeit-Schatten Quartet (cl./vn./vc./pf.).

PAAR FEATURED ON YOU TUBE - WATCH HIS AWARD WINNING PERFORMANCE!

The video of the highly praised and rewarded performance of the Klobučar's Suite has recently been posted on YouTube gaining a notable viewer rating in only a short period of time. The clip dates from March 2007, from the recital that M.Paar gave with a Japanese pianist H.Imagawa at the Illyrian Hall in the Zagreb Old Center. The specialty of this performance comes from a supreme and fully controlled demonstration of the circular breathing technique, while the clarinet sound remains intact despite of it. The fourth, published movement of the Suite, with the title Con brio, is rather describable - due to its constant motility and recognised neoclassical style - as a Moto Perpetuo of the Avant-garde. To see the clip in its full size, just click on it while playbacked on this site. YouTube homepage will display and you'll be able to rate it and to comment on it, as well as to subscribe to the all upcoming, M.Paar related clips.

PAAR WINS THE CROATIAN COMPOSERS' SOCIETY PRIZE FOR 2006/07!

Mihael Paar is the annual winner of the Croatian Composers' Society Prize for the best interpretation of a work by a Croatian composer at the Darko Lukić Tribune. The jubilee celebrated 40th Tribune finals hosted ten exquisite performing artists under 30 years of age who in the period from October last year till April this year, presented themselves with a solo recital in the distinguish Lisinski hall. Paar's interpretation of the Suite by A.Klobučar, as confirmed by the jury compiled from the representatives of the artists, critics (Vjesnik Herald) organizer (HDGU/Lisinski) and composers (HDS), rates as the best and most versatile performance of a work by a Croatian composer in the 2006/07 season. The Darko Lukić Tribune itself excels as the oldest and most prestige competition for the Croatian artists which in its long history launched careers of some of the most acclaimed musicians in the region such as hornist Radovan Vlatković and soprano Ivanka Boljkovac. M.Paar's award consists of a diploma, cash prize and the prizewinners' concert held in the Lisinski hall on the 30th April. Both of his concerts (competitive and prizewinners') were recorded and aired by the Croatian radio, while his award-winning performance of the Klobučar's Suite will be exclusively featured on his Debut CD scheduled for 2008.

RECITALS IN MARCH - APPERANCE IN THE FAMOUS ZAGREB CONCERT HALL

As a duo with a pianist H.Imagawa, M.Paar performed for the very first time (March 7th) in the program of the the major Croatian concert agency - the Zagreb Concert Management. Piano pianissimo - the chamber music cycle of the Management and the constitutive part of its program, is held in the magnificent ambiance of the Zagreb historic Illyrian Hall and has so far hosted a number of most renowned domestic and foreign artists. Thus, special honour has been given to Mihael and Hiroyo who responded to such a challenge with an inspired performance of a diverse and extended, two-hour (!) program containing works by Gershwin, Benjamin, Brahms, Lovreglio, Klobučar, Poulenc and Schubert. Having a similar program, the Duo performed two days earlier in the town of Samobor and a day after in Velika Gorica, having the Zagreb concert recorded by the Croatian Radio and broadcast afterwards in part.
250th MOZART ANNIVERSARY – PAAR AS A SOLOIST IN THE CLARINET CONCERTO

With exceedingly atractive style the Croatian Music Institute (Croatian: HGZ) and M.Paar took part in the concluding celebration of the 250th anniversary of W.A.Mozart's birth. The only, never surpassed Mozart's Clarinet Concerto in A-major featured by high Koechl's number 622 came to schedule after excellently received performances of the Clarinet Quintet K581 and the Croatian Premiere of the Allegro in B-flat major K516c from May this year. M.Paar and the Symphony Orchestra of HGZ under dr. M.Bačić carried out the concert on the eve of the Christmas Eve in the Concert Hall of Matija Gubec in Stubica (Croatia). It was specially for this event that M.Paar composed quite challenging arrangement* of the famous Rondo alla turca and performed it at the end of the concert accompanied by the thundering applause of the thrilled audience. HGZ with the Orchestra as its integral part, excels as the oldest Croatian music institution whose part in music and social life of Zagreb and Croatia is today being estimated as crucial. Founded as early as 1827, HGZ has inherited the legacy of the middle-european cultural circle. Its magnificent concert hall and the treasury of music scripts archive placed in a historical building in the very centre of Zagreb, witnesses the tradition of the highest rank. NOTE: The arrangement is about to be published and will be available for purchase exclusively on www.mihaelpaar.com

SUMMER TOUR 2006 – RECITALS & CONCERTS IN SALZBURG & BAVARIA

In only a week time, in the period between 11 & 18 August , M.Paar gave a total of five recitals with two completely different programmes. The schedule starting with the Bavaria concerts was exclusively featured through the collaboration with the violinist/violist Stephan Gröger (Germany) and the pianist Wen Xia (China) and immidiately followed by the recitals with the prominent Japanese pianist Hiroyo Imagawa in the Salzburg's Romanischer Saal whose unique ambiance witnessed the performances of works by Brahms (Sonata No.1), Schumann (Fantasiestücke), Debussy (Premiere Rhapsodie) and Poulenc (Sonata), arguably the very best of all for the medium. In the meantime, M.Paar received official invitations to take part in the renowned Vienna and Düsseldorf clarinet competitions, while after the obligatory recital given in the middle of June, he completed his master thesis winning the MA degree with highest honor from the Mozarteum University of Music and Dramatic Arts.
MOZART FOREVER – CLOSING GALA OF THE 2006 EUROPEAN WEEK

The European Week - annual event with the town of Samobor as one of the 2006 Croatian hosts, was exclusively marked by W.A.Mozart and the 250th anniversary of the composer's birth. On May 10, last day of one-week special event, Mihael Paar and Sebastian String Quartet gave a Gala Concert in the Prica Gallery performing some of the most distinguished works from the Mozart's chamber opus. Besides the famous Clarinet Quintet KV 581 (Stadler-Quintet) and just as famous String Quartet KV 387 (1st Haydn-Quartet), the uniqueness of the entire show was ensured by the Croatian premiere of the uncompleted Allegro for clarinet and string quartet KV Anh. 91. Mozart Forever with the background program, stood as an ambitious project of the organizer POU Samobor as well as performers themselves, while the production output was esspecially featured through the accompanying details whose late Baroque elements tried to "evoke" the spirit of Amadeus itself, and the late 18th century Vienna and Salzburg.
10 YEARS FROM DEBUT – SAMOBOR MUSIC AUTUMN 1995

Ten years ago, on November 10, 1995 on the program of the 20th Samobor Music Autumn festival, the 15-year old Mihael Paar was presented as one of the most distinguished clarinetists of his generation. The Windstrings (string) orchestra, enlarged by the wind section of the Croatian Army Wind Symphony Orchestra, (SPOHV) formed a large symphony orchestra guided by maestro Alan Bjelinski and Mihael Paar as a featured soloist in Weber’s Concertino, a revolutionary work of clarinet and early romantic literature. A large audience witnessed M.Paar's debut which exceeded all expectations of the organizers and justified the invitation which had been given to the rising artist, while the history of the Samobor Music Autumn festival itself will mention that M.Paar was and still remains the only solo-clarinetist ever to performed at the festival since its inception in 1975.

AUDIO CLIPS UPLOADED – LISTEN TO RECORDINGS & INTERVIEWS

Finally, at your disposal, there is multimedia contents which has not been present at the site till now. The failure finds its reasons and justification in problems of a technical nature and in time factor. Studio and live audio recordings, as well as radio interviews, have been uploaded while the rest of the audio and video clips which now have a note SOON will be uploaded subsequently, thus completing the multimedia part of the site. In order to reproduce the stated clips you need to have Windows Media Player installed on your system. WMP will reproduce clips directly from the site, in real time and without a typical download. Taking this into consideration, the fast internet conection (adsl, LAN) will be necessary, while the streaming on the systems with dial-up connection (modem, ISDN) will be somewhat slower. Listen to live recording (from 2002) of the finale from the Clarinet Concerto by A.Shaw with a well-known glissando g3-c4, superb virtuoso recordings (from 2003 & 2004) of Rossini's Allegro Maggiore and Rimsky-Korsakov's Flight Of The Bumble Bee or inspire live recording (2004) of Müllenbach's Zeit-Schatten Cadence. Write your own review on any of the stated clips by clicking on the next link. You can download WMP here (available both for PC and MAC). NOTE: The link will open a new window

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE ADRIATIC TOUR – ONE MAN SHOW ON THE ISLAND OF UGLJAN

Together with the pianist Mario Šoša, Mihael Paar gave three remarkably successful recitals at the International Festivals on the Croatian part of the Adriatic coast this summer (2005). The performances at the Omiš Summer Festival (July 26), Biograd Summer Festival (July 29) and Korčula Summer Festival (August 28) left the audiences with an overwhelmingly positive impression. Their ovation elicited the inspired performance of Schubert's Ave Maria, a work not listed in the concert program. Since the concert of the Pressler-Paar-Kemperle Trio scheduled for August 7 on the Island of Ugljan had been cancelled, and because of the repeated requests by the organizer, Mihael Paar took on the challenge of having a non-accompanied recital. In the period of just a few days, he prepared a virtuoso program containing works by Bach (Partitas) and Paganini (Cappricies), solo pieces by Stravinsky and Grgin, as well as well known themes which he arranged himself. An additional treat for the spectators was a surprise turn in the program where he presented himself as a bas-clarinetist, performing a potpourri of well-known themes, whereas in the last composition – Amazing Grace – he showed his aspiration towards blues and improvisation. Finally, by playing an encore – a famous Early Croatian song Fala (Croatian: Thank You) – he sincerely thanked the audience who described the performances of the last two compositions as being transcendent.

INTERVIEW GIVEN TO THE SSN HERALD – IN THE SPIRIT OF HOMO UNIVERSALIS

Robert Škiljan, editor-in-chief of the SSN Herald, talked to Mihael Paar at the beginning of July 2005 and recorded a very detailed and comprehensive interview in which its protagonist gave his consideration to all relevant aspects of his artistic work. M.Paar inspiringly talks about the disposition of man, the concept of jazz, the relation between classical and entertaining, the digital era and its implications, musical composition, and journalism. A dynamic conversation reveals complex and highly defined attitudes of this young artist whose reflections go into thematically different areas. About the gap between classical and entertaining M.Paar says: "...it is impossible to ignore the quality of the musical being, no matter what genre it comes from”, whereas about himself as a composer he states: "…musical composition meets my other inclination which I as a reproductive musician am not able to respond to adequately.” When it comes to the matter he is being occupied with M.Paar is very explicit: "When I devote myself to something, I devote myself completely, without a compromise, and with all my being. The result of this is my aspiration towards perfection and virtuosity in the widest meaning of the word, so the average always comes too heavily upon me.” In the end he concludes in the spirit of the homo universalis: "I strongly believe that a human being as such should feel called upon to use all his resources as to finally develop his potentials into concrete and articulate skills.” Read the entire interview.

PIANO COMPOSITION PRIZE BARLETTA 2005 – M. PAAR 3rd PRIZE WINNER!

At the International Piano Composition Competition Town of Challenge (15th Edition) which took place in Barletta (Bari) in Italy from May 3 to May 8, Mihael Paar won 3rd prize for his one movement piece Amoroso for solo piano. The given theme of this edition was Poetry and Piano with the choice to compose a work for solo piano, four hands piano or solo voice accompanied by piano, with a maximum allowed duration not exceeding 20 minutes. In a single category without age limit, eighteen compositions submitted anonymously and signed only by a maxim entered for the competition. Although it is only now that M.Paar brought out this composition of his, he wrote it as early as in 2000, when he was not even 20 at the time, but still the work has not had its premiere yet. Special weight to this prize is given by the fact that he is neither a pianist nor has he ever studied composition, whereas in a very strong international competition he distinguished himself as one of the youngest competitors and the only one coming from Croatia

REVIEW OF A RECENT PERFORMANCE – VIRTUOSITY OF CLEAR ARTICULATION

Zlatko Stahuljak, music critic for Vijenac - a Magazine of Matica hrvatska for Literature, Art & Science writes about recital given in the Palace of Matica hrvatska on the January 17, 2005: "With this recital, clarinetist Mihael Paar showed a high range of sonority in all registers of his attractively movable instrument along with virtuosity of clear articulation in legato as well as in much more difficult staccato which particularly became prominent in the last addition - composition by N. Rimsky-Korsakov. His performance drew enthusiastic applause from the audience."

LATEST RECORDING – THE FLIGHT OF THE BUMBLE BEE

Listen to Mihael Paar's latest recording made in collaboration with renowned Croatian pianist Ivan Batoš in October 2004. The Flight Of The Bumble Bee, a classic by Nikolaj Rimsky-Korsakov was recorded under supervision of the producer Bernard Mihelić. It was first broadcast on the Croatian Radio on October 21, 2004. The recording was highly praised by the audience, critics, and especially by M.Paar's clarinetist colleagues due to artist's ability of using complex techniques of double tonguing and circular breathing and above all due to his virtuoso technical performance. You can write your own review of the clip by clicking on the next link. In order to reproduce it you need to have Windows Media Player installed on your system. WMP will reproduce clips directly from the site, in the real time and without the classic download. Taking this into consideration, the fast internet conection (e.g. DSL) will be necessary, while the reproduction on the systems with dial-up connection (modem, ISDN) or slower will be somewhat slower. You can download WMP here (available both for PC and MAC). NOTE: The link will open a new window.
